Radical Racquets II
Unit 12; Week 23
Tuesday
Equipment:
Racquets, small Fluffilos, birdies, hoops.
WARM UP: 10
Second Decision
ACTIVITY
1: Striking Through a Target
-
Find
partners.
-
One partner
has a racquet and a Fluffilo/birdie while the other partner
holds a hoop about 10 feet away.
-
Partner 1
will drop the Fluffilo/birdie and hit it using mature motor
patterns.
-
The racquet
should be flat or slightly slanted depending on which striking
pattern they use.
-
Instruct them
to keep their eyes on the Fluffilo/birdie the whole time.
See it hit the racquet and go to the target.
-
Step forward
on the opposite foot for the forehand swing and the same foot
for the backhand swing.
-
After 10
hits, the partners switch roles.
-
Have them
count how many times they make it through the hoop! The highest
combined score between partners wins!
ACTIVITY
2: Racquet
Four Square
-
Use four
square courts (or draw with chalk) and label them A, B, C, and
D.
-
Get into
groups of four with each player in their own square with a
racquet.
-
Each group
gets one Fluffilo/birdie.
-
Square A
starts the game.
-
They must hit
the Fluffilo/birdie to another square, by dropping it and
hitting it before it hits the ground.
-
The
Fluffilo/birdie cannot be hit to the person who hit it to them.
-
The person
who misses the Fluffilo/birdie goes to square D, and everyone
else moves up a square.
-
The goal is
to reach square A and stay there!
-
Tips:
-
Keep your
weight on the balls of your feet, with your knees slightly bent.
-
To be ready,
hold your racquet in front of your body about waist high.
-
Stay near the
back of the square so you can move forward to the
Fluffilo/birdie.
ACTIVITY
3: Racquet Rumble
- Set up two
lines.
- Class
starts on one line, each player with a racquet and
Fluffilo/birdie.
- On "go"
signal, ALL players cross the line while gently batting their
own Fl'o or birdie up in the air.
- Wait on
opposite line for next signal to cross.
- Try
crossing with palm-up bouncing (forehand), palm-down bouncing
(back-hand), or alternating.
- CHALLENGE:
have half of the class start on one line, while the other half
starts on the opposite line. Cross at the same time - trying to
avoid other players and maintain control while crossing.
- ADVANCED
CHALLENGE: create a square - players on each of the four sides.
Cross at the same time while maintaining control and avoiding
other players.
ACTIVITY
4: Badminton Volleyball
-
Groups of
six.
-
Everyone has
a racquet and each group has a birdie.
-
There are
three players on each team.
-
A player near
the back of the court serves underhand to the other side of the
net then returns to base position on the court following the
drop shot.
-
The opponents
hit the birdie twice on their side of the net and then return it
over the net.
-
The birdie
must be hit twice by two different players on each side of the
net before it’s returned.
-
The opposite
team should try to place the birdie away from an opponent.
-
The birdie
must be hit before it touches the ground.
-
When the
serving team misses, the other team scores.
-
Play round
robin so that each team plays everyone else!
-
The Teacher
can call penalties on anyone. Every player abides by the
decisions of the officials, accepts the outcome of the game, and
shows appreciation for participants!
-
Tips:
-
Have quick
feet! Move quickly to get behind and under the birdie.
-
One player
should be close to the net for the last hit.
-
Get home!
After each hit, move back to your position on the court so the
space is covered.
COOL DOWN:
Stretching
-
Have students
sit in a big circle with the teacher as part of the circle.
-
Sit
criss-cross and stretch one arm up and reach up to the sky…
other hand… both hands… then bring both hands down over the
legs, bring soles of feet together, and stretch forward.
-
Uncross legs,
extend them in front, and stretch forward.
-
Open legs as
wide as possible, toes pointing straight up to the sky, stretch
arms toward one foot… the other foot… center…
-
Have the
students suggest other stretches.
