FAQ's Frequently Asked Questions

1.    What makes Tandalay Curriculum different from other programs?

·       Our philosophy

·       Our equipment

·       Our activities

·       Our ease-of-implementation

·       Our comprehensive approach

·       Our desire to make teaching quality PE easy for you and FUN for students.

·       Our commitment to excellence and success for everyone

2.    Who developed Tandalay and why?

·       Tandalay Curriculum is the brain-child of Tami Phillips, MS., Kinesiology. After years in the fitness industry, developing certification programs and teaching workshops for Personal Trainers and Group Fitness Instructors, Tami began teaching the college course "PE for Children."

·       Upon researching the current status of physical education in the city, state, and nation, Tami felt compelled to provide a solution. That solution needs to address a number of issues:

·       It needs to be simple so that teachers would not need to spend additional time in prep.

·       It needs to be FUN so that students would WANT to participate

·       It needs to be non-intimidating so that ALL students would feel successful and enjoy enhanced self-esteem.

·       It needs to have lessons that did not entail a lot of set-up and multiple pieces of equipment for a single lesson.

·       Tandalay was developed to meet these needs in a point-click-and play format that anyone – from an aid or a high-school student, to a physical education specialist – could use to teach quality physical education. And we DID IT!!! Yay Tandalay!!

3.   Where did the name Tandalay come from?

·       Tandalay is derived from the word "Tandy" found in the 1919 novel by Sherwood Anderson entitled Winesburg, Ohio. Tandy has a number of deep meanings, of which we barely scratch the surface of here. Tandy is a rare and beautiful quality found in certain individuals. It is a beautiful strength that comes from within. It is the manifestation and evidence of God in a child. It is an ideal. "Dare to be strong and courageous. Venture anything. Be brave enough to dare to be loved. Be something more than man or woman. Be Tandy."

·       We think of Tandalay as an opportunity to instill a sense of courage, a willingness to try new things, and a deep sense of confidence. Tandalay is perseverance, integrity, honor, and compassion.

4.   Can I get hard copies of your curriculum or is it just online?

·       Our curriculum is available online and in binders for each developmental level.

·       At Tandalay we like to keep evolving. Our work is never "done." The online format allows for immediate updates and changes. Your subscription includes all updates and new features as they are introduced, eliminating the need for "new editions." As new information becomes available, and as changes occur in requirements and standards, we are able to address these changes quickly.

·       To purchase your binder, please visit www.all-out-play.com. Binders are available for each developmental level for only $59 each.

5.   What is the best way to print my lessons?

·       If you enjoy our daily lesson plan format, simply click "print" from your lesson plan window. Or you can highlight the game or activity of choice and click "print selection" from your print window.

·       If you'd like all of the games and activities from the entire unit printed off, simply click on the Unit Number and you'll be taken to a pdf file for ease of printing.

6.   How many lesson plans are available with my subscription?

·       For each developmental level (PreK-2; 3-5; 6-8) we have 16 Units of lesson plans, with TEN lessons in each unit, and 5 activities per lesson. That gives you 160 lesson plans, or 800 games and activities per developmental level, or a total of 480 lesson plans and 2,400 games and activities.

·       With your subscription, you have access to ALL of them!

7.    What type of equipment will I need to teach these lessons?

·       Fluffilos! Yay Fluffilos! That's all you need for a whole year of fun and games! You might want to purchase some other items, but the fun and standards that you can meet with Fluffilos is unmatched!

·       We have made a conscious effort to use just a few pieces of equipment per Unit to keep things manageable and cost-effective. You can purchase ALL of the equipment used in our curriculum in easy-to-order packs.

·       Bare Essentials, Basic Needs, or Bonsai Bundles – we recommend a version of these packs for EVERY single teacher on campus. These bundles include easy-to-store, functional equipment that can be used indoors or out for literally thousands of activities! Bundles are designed to give you the most functionality, versatility, and PLAYability possible for your budget.

·       Sports Packs – the equipment you'll need for those fun sports units! We use the traditional equipment, but play in some non-traditional ways! Purchase these packs from either GL-Sports or US-Games.

8.   How much equipment should I order?

·       We recommend a classroom set of the Bare, Basic, or Bonsai Bundle for EVERY teacher who participates in Physical Education lessons.

·       We recommend a complete grade level set of the Sports Pack, so that everyone in each grade can go out and play together! For example, purchase enough equipment for all second graders to go out and play at the same time, then share the equipment with the kindergarten and first grade classrooms as well – staggering PE times to make the most of equipment use.

·       If funding is not available to purchase packs for each grade level, order the 3-5 packs and share them across the board. When possible, try to provide one piece of equipment per player or for each set of partners to maximize participation and movement success.

9.   What is a Fluffilo?

·       A Fluffilo is a large, fluffy, brightly-colored yarn ball. It is softer and less dense than a fleece ball, making it easier to catch and throw, leading to increased success and confidence.

·       Fluffilos were designed to take the intimidation out of Physical Education and they totally do that! Kids of all ages (even adults) LOVE them! No matter how hard you get hit with one, it simply doesn't hurt! Yay!

·       Fluffilos come in sets of one-dozen different color combinations: 6 bright solid colors, and 6 mixed colors. The color combinations make it great for team and partner designation, learning color groups and combinations, and for fun, colorful PLAY!

10.  What is the best way to "grade" physical education?

·       Participation? No.

·       Attendance? No.

·       Effort? No.

·       Fitness testing scores? No.

·       Standards? Yes! Visit www.myPEscore.com to find out how simple and effective it can be to asses PE according to the National Standards.

11.  Why evaluate students according to standards for physical education?

·       NASPE (National Association for Sport & Physical Education) has established National Physical Education standards. For more information about these standards, please visit NASPE's website.

·       Evaluating students based on the standards that have been established for physical education provides a fair and accurate measure, and provides consistency for educators and student learning. Attendance, participation, effort, and fitness test scores do not provide a fair or accurate representation of student achievement or success in physical education.

12. What are physical education standards?

·       NASPE says it best. Please visit their website at: http://www.aahperd.org/naspe/template.cfm?template=publications-nationalstandards.html

·       Individual state standards will vary, but are either based on NASPE's national standards, or have been revised to reflect them.

25. This seems like a simple solution to a complex problem. Is it too good to be true?

·       Oliver Wendell Holmes said that he "wouldn't give a fig for the simplicity on this side of complexity; but I would give my right arm for the simplicity on the far side of complexity."

·       At Tandalay, that is our mission. To take the complex issue of physical education standards, grading, and teaching quality lesson plans - and simplify it - so that it is not only manageable, but effective, educational, and FUN for everyone!
