Activity Selection Criteria

In developing our lesson plans, we have followed some very simple, yet very important rules. In order to be included, each game or activity must meet the following criteria:

  • Keep ALL kids moving all the time during activities. This involves:
    • No elimination games (games in which kids get “out”).
    • No waiting in line for a turn.
    • This rule eliminates many "traditional" games, such as steal-the-bacon, dodge-ball, kickball, baseball, or even duck-duck-goose! You won't find any of those on our site.
    • All of our games must pass the "snapshot" rule. If you were to take a snapshot of the activity at any time during play, how many kids are actively participating? The answer must be "all of them!"

  • Reduce/eliminate the INTIMIDATION factor.
    • We encourage relays for time, rather than 1st finished (the last or slowest student is often ridiculed and embarrassed – even by his/her own team). Teams count "rounds completed" rather than first team done. This also provides an opportunity for expanded movement time, skill development, and teamwork.
    • Whole team relays are also encouraged. The task must be completed by the entire team as a unit, thus eliminating pressure on individual participants.
    • Participants may volunteer to demonstrate or perform, but are never forced.
    • Our lessons avoid activities in which individuals are put on the spot. We encourage group movement performances and celebrate individual successes.
    • Our curriculum reduces the intimidation factor for teachers and Teacher's as well, by providing simple, step-by-step instructions throughout each lesson! You don't have to be an athlete to enjoy teaching quality PE!

  • Sportsmanship, cooperation, teamwork, and respect for self and others are taught prior to competition.
    • In Grades K-2 the emphasis is on individual motor skill development.
    • In Grades 3-5 teamwork is encouraged while refining motor skills.
    • Grades 6-8 lesson plans introduce more small group and team competition, while further developing speed and accuracy of movement and encouraging total health and fitness.

  • Equipment Requirements and Prep Time
    • Games and activities that require significant prep time or a lot of equipment are not included.
    • Equipment is kept to a minimum, with maximum and creative application of the few pieces we use.
    • Our lesson plans and activities are selected based on minimum prep time, maximum benefit and fun for participants.
